Frederick H. Clausen papers, 1898, 1904-1945.

Papers of Frederick Clausen, president of the Van Brunt Manufacturing Company at Horicon and president of the Wisconsin Manufacturers Association, consisting largely of speeches and writings on the farm equipment industry, grain seeders manufactured by Van Brunt, conservation, and good government. Speeches during the period 1932-1934 relate to his role in the creation of the Wisconsin Unemployment Compensation Law and his support for the National Recovery Administration's code for the farm equipment industry. Later speeches to the Farm Equipment Institute and other audiences called for economy in government. Of a few scattered letters there is one from H.A. Jung of the American Vigilant Intelligence Federation, to Clausen's brother Leon R. Clausen, president of the J.I. Case Co., about the enthusiastic response to one of the NRA speeches. Two articles concern the history of the Van Brunt Company, which was sold to John Deere in 1909. Other papers include biographical clippings and campaign literature from Clausen's unsuccessful bid for election to the United States Senate in 1940, miscellaneous and family correspondence, and a scrapbook of memorabilia compiled by Clausen as a University of Wisconsin student. Copies of two reminiscences written in 1922 and 1927 by Frederick's father, Henry Clausen (1845-1935) discuss his boyhood experiences in Denmark, his travels as a sailor in the 1860s, and his settlement at Fox Lake, Wis., as a grain dealer in 1872.
